If your electricity bills seem to be escalating every month, perhaps it is time for you and your family to consider ways to reduce electricity consumption. With a few simple steps, not only can you save money, you can also cut down on your carbon footprint and play a part in protecting the environment.
Form a habit to turn off the light switch whenever you leave a room.
Turn off all electrical appliances or electronic devices, such as mobile phone charger, television, radio, and computers once you are done using them. If you need to keep your computer running, enable the "sleep mode" feature or allow your computer to "hibernate" automatically after 30 minutes or so of inactivity.
Turn up the temperature of your air-con to 24 degree Celsius. Install a programmable thermostat to operate your air-con more effectively.
Unplug any appliances that are seldom used from the power point.
Purchase only energy-efficient rated home appliances and equipment. LED lights are also a good idea. While they may cost more, you will save money in the long run.
What Should You Do During Power Failure?
While power failures are uncommon in Singapore, it can happen every now and then. There are many causes of power failure; failure at power stations, damages or overloading of your home's electrical distribution system are some common reasons. What should you do during power failure? Here are some tips to remember:
Do not panic! Panicking is the most common reaction, and possibly the most dangerous one too.
To see if the outage is due to faults at the power station or at your home's electrical circuit, look outside and check if your home is the only unit in the block without power. If only your home is affected, call our 24-hour emergency hotline immediately.
Use flashlights instead of candles to prevent fire. You should always keep fresh batteries in your flashlight.
Turn off all electrical equipment and appliances in order not to overload the circuits when power is restored, although you may leave a light on so that you know when power is back on.
Keep the refrigerator door closed. If the outage lasts more than 2 hours, throw away the food in the refrigerator.
